The Hedgehog and the Fox

London Metropolitan University, 26 February 2009.

A lecture to accompany the opening of the first public exhibition of the work of David Kohn Architects.

“While the fox knows many things, the hedgehog knows one big thing.”
Archilochus

The lecture promoted a fox-like approach to creativity that would draw on diverse interests and influences, seeing projects as momentary coagulations rather than convergent endgames. Three ideas that inform the work of the office were discussed: heterogeneity, transparency and comfort. These were illustrated through six projects: Sicily Overlooked, Flash, Modern Art, Deptford Creekside, Heterotopia: The Art Space of the Future and Stable Acre.
