Homerton College

A gateway building signalling Homerton’s importance in Cambridge and honouring the College’s ‘Genius Loci’.

David Kohn Architects were shortlisted in an invited competition to design a new landmark entrance building along the Hills Road site for Homerton College, Cambridge.

The brief required the re-planning of the Mary Allen Building and integration of a new porter’s lodge to create a coherent masterplan for the site. Additionally, the brief called for a new entrance appropriate to the size and ambition of Cambridge's newest College, as well as an expansion of the College Library, enabling it to host exhibitions and provide study space.

Our proposal strove to respect the campus’ Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts legacy while being emphatically contemporary. By utilizing low embodied carbon materials and innovative technologies, our building not only minimizes environmental impact but also serves as an energy hub, offsetting carbon emissions and harnessing solar energy for a net carbon-negative impact.
